A Program that Fosters and Supports Teacher Advocates for Economic Education

The Economics & Leadership Cadre trains teachers to empower students to make smart economic and financial choices. High School and Middle School teachers from Hawai`i are selected to join a cadre of “Economic Champions.” Cadre teachers receive specialized training that will allow them to assist schools within their complex to integrate economics and personal finance into the classroom. 

Upon completion of the program teachers will have:
- a deeper understanding of basic economics  
 concepts
- specific strategies for teaching economics through other
 subject areas
- the ability to effectively advocate for economics in their 
 school and complex area in the future.

As part of their training, each Cadre teacher has the opportunity to:
- complete a graduate level course in economics
- develop and teach a unit integrating economics concepts
 using active learning strategies
- earn up to 9 Professional Development / college credits 

Cadre Program Requirements.  Participating teachers will be required to complete the following:

4 or 5 day Courses (three of the following):
- Integrating Economics in the Classroom*
- Right Start in Teaching Economics Institute
- Environment and the Economy
- Hawaii’s Economy (pending approval)
- FTE Economics for Leaders (pending approval)
(*Required course w/additional 2 courses)

1 or 2 day Courses (two of the following):
- Advocating for Economics*
- International Economics Summit
- Economics Boot Camp
(*Required course w/additional 1 course)

Specialty HCEE workshops/courses offered may fulfil requirement 
(ex. Virtual Economics 4.0 Curriculum Training Workshop).

HCEE Program (one of the following):
- Calendar Contest
- Stock Market Simulation
- Economics Challenge

Teacher Networking (attend a minimum of two sessions):
Two networking sessions will be offered each year       
        (sessions will be held concurrently with a workshop). The 
        sessions will feature specific topics for discussion and will 
        provide an opportunity for peer sharing of curriculum, 
        ideas, challenges, and successes.

Application and Program submission is open year-round.  Please complete the application form found here and mail, fax or email it to the Hawai`i Council on Economic Education.
