Why
Teach Economics in Grades K-12?
Because
we're all better off when we understand the idea of choice
and the price (money or otherwise) that must be paid for our
choices.
Because
we want future adults who can avoid or manage debt, who can
help make intelligent decisions about business and government
affairs.
Because
kids already use economics every day to make choices in their
own lives, and can learn from their own behavior and that
of their families.
Because
economics is really about personal and family choices - about
spending, saving, use of time, career, education, even family
size, and other major life decisions.
Because
it's important for younger children - even in kindergarten
- to understand basic ideas of trade-offs, of saving for the
future, of limits on our time, energy, and money.
Because
Economics is not just a school course - it's a part of history,
social studies, health, civics, and even literature.
Conclusion
The crucial
issues confronting our society is economic in nature . . .
jobs, income taxes, public spending, energy crises, and the
critical issues of physical survival. The ability to understand
and make sound economic decisions is a basic survival skill
that will enable students - our future employees, business
people, and government leaders - to effectively cope with
the economic uncertainties affecting all our lives.
